ABOUT VULCANO CLAY™
In 1991 Vulcano Clay™ was founded by Robert Hawkins, as a bespoke design studio that made and distributed beautiful hand-made tiles throughout Australia
Today, it is our deep appreciation of aesthetics, culture, design, and humanity that combined to form Vulcano Clay™ , that allows us to design, select and source authentic materials from around the globe.

our founder
Our founder Robert Hawkins, developed a deep appreciation of design whilst studying Art at the National Art School, Sydney.
After completing his studies, Robert travelled extensively throughout Asia and the Middle East, where his passion for creating sustainable communities led him to volunteering, as a ceramics teacher with Khadi Commission in India and at Nyumba Ya Sanna in Tanzania.
Prior to establishing Vulcano Clay™ and later Vulcano, Robert spent 12 years as an exhibiting artist and Ceramics teacher in Sydney.

Introducing Moroccan by Vulcano Clay™
Whilst travelling to Morocco to source authentic handcrafted Moroccan tiles, I had the opportunity to experience first-hand the craftsmanship of a 1200 year old tradition - The Art of Zellij.
Spending time with the Artisans, I was inspired by their dedication to craft and the skills they had mastered over a lifetime. For for this reason, I have chosen our Moroccan Collection as the first to carry the Vulcano Clay™ stamp of quality and authenticity.
